I found this "piece of flair" on Facebook a couple of months ago, and it made me laugh:
Because really, who has hair like the Disney girls? No one! As I thought about it, I've decided that certain books, T.V. shows, and movies have possibly given me unrealistic expectations about life. Take the book and movie, Sense and Sensibility, for example:
The girls have no inheritance, and they are oh, so poor... so they are forced to move to... gasp! A two-story house in the country, instead of living in their mansion!! Ahhhhh! The horror! The horror! And they have to go from having 25 servants to... wait for it... only ONE!! Oh, how WILL they survive??? So, poor = having only one servant and living in a two-story house. Realistic? No. Poor is... well, not being able to afford shoes that fit your daughter's feet. Or worrying about how to afford coats that fit your kids. Now that's what it's like to be poor.
P.S. A little factoid about the movie, Sense and Sensibility - they actually permed the sheeps' hair in that movie, so they would look cute and fluffy. Funny, huh?
Anyways, I digress... Second example. Friends:
Can a struggling chef and a cafe waitress make enough money to afford the rent for a two-bedroom Greenwich apartment? Uh, NO. Not realistic.
Third example: 101 Dalmations (Yes, our copy of 101 Dalmations is still lost in the Black Hole which is our house. Sigh.):
Could a composer, who has never had a hit song, and his wife, who does... well, you never really learn what it is that she does... afford a full-time maid? Nope.
So there you have it. Examples from pop culture that give you unrealistic expectations.
I lost your email address! gah... I'll call you!
ReplyDeleteSo, did you get some trees?
ReplyDeleteHope all went well today.
Just plant them deep and water hard for a few days. They will look like dead twigs until Spring.
Not much longer and you will get your first freeze. I stop watering my trees after the freeze so they can go dormant. BUT I am not an expert at all...just what I do.
Maybe it is amazing that mine are alive!
I read an article about that once, like what TV people would make in real life. It mentioned Carrie from "Sex and the City", saying she's a journalist, but she has a posh apartment and buys fancy shoes and goes out every night with her friends. Same idea.
ReplyDeleteSo true- I am amazed at how your mind works. I never think of stuff like that, but it is very intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! I still maintain that Disney and Jane Austen have ruined my chances of ever finding someone I can truly fall head over heals in love with! Well, that and my own imagination...no real guy is ever good enough!
ReplyDeleteStupid books and movies. I mean in one way they are meant for entertainment, but I think most people take them too seriously. I have to laugh because I just re-read sense and sensibility, and I thought the same thing! What about us girls that have no inheritance but are married with debt. I mean where would I fit in with that whole scenario?
