"Beachy Waves"???

My cute, cute, cute friend, Patty Cake, is going to be a bridesmaid for her sister's wedding in, like, a week. She thinks it would be pretty (and I concur) to have her hair long and wavy, a la Elle:

Vanessa:

Gisele:

or Kate:

So we've been trying to figure out how the heck to do it. I read somewhere that you twist a chunk of hair, then curl it with a curling iron to make it wavy. I wanted to try it, but I am currently without curling iron. Then I ran into this tutorial on YouTube, for "beachy waves" - the girl uses a flat iron! (And I like this tutorial because it has the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in the background, but it's a different version - Hawaiian-style, with a ukelele - very nice.) So I studied the tutorial and then tried it:

It mainly turned into ringlets!! Who knew that a flat iron could make ringlets? My little-girl-hair-guru, Sue, always talks about curling her girls' hair with her flat iron, and I was like, what kind of funky-arsed flat iron does she have?? But mine did the same! As the day has worn on, the ringlets have actually become more pronounced. So...not exactly the look I was going for, but maybe if I move the flat iron through my hair more swiftly or something. I feel like it's a little bit too Early Nineties Karlenn, but I don't know. Ben sure likes it.
Do any of you know how to do this wavy look? Patty and I are going to experiment on Sunday night. I'd love your input.

  1. OMG. It looks great. I don't think early 90s. Well... let's see. The back is it. It looks like Gisele's. If only we could get the rest of me to look like Gisele :) The front. Maybe if we "curl" it going out it would be better... and not so modest. I want something a little wild. Something that says party. But, seriously you did that with a flat iron??? I can't wait until Sunday.

  2. How about old fashioned dry electric curlers?

  3. Good question. I've always wanted to try the rag thing, like Amy on "Little Women" has one morning. Autumn Bottom did the flat iron curl thing, and yeah, it was "pretty prom" looking.

Here is that song. I bought the CD in Hawaii. Love it! So many nice songs.

  5. Your hair looks cute!  I love to learn things on you tube- such a good resource.  I've looked up corkscrew bow making on there and how to use a netti pot. (interesting!)  My sister Steph, does her hair cute with soft ringlets- she uses a big curling iron and starts at h er scalp- I've tried to do it before though and no luck, it's good your practicing.  Love the poster and good idea to use props when talking to the kids (I'll have to remember that!)

  7. You inspired me last night and after my shower I couldn't sleep so I put a bunch of product in my hair and put it up in 4 stragetically placed messy buns and went to bed. When I woke up I blow dried it (cuz I have a lot of hair and it didn't dry), hairsprayed...took it down and tadaa...beachy waves. Really cute. Give that a try and see what you think! I think next time I am going to give it more time and maybe the curls will stay a little better. We will see. I shoulda taken a pic before work, maybe next time. I still don't have a flat iron....

  8. maybe alternate curling one direction, then the next. that way they don't ringlet together. Like twist right, then twist left the next time? just a thought. I don't know. The other thing I heard is using a curling iron: hold the hair at the end and wrap it from the root down the curling iron barrel. you don't actually use the iron to hold the hair. make sense? good luck!

  11. Karlenn, your blog makes me laugh and laugh! I love it! I am glad to know that I am not the only one who can't figure out the "beachy" look. But then again, I still have the same look from high school just with a muffin top.

  12. Very cute!
In the 70's we did it with hot curlers or curling iron with LOTS of hairspray!

  13. Looks like you did a great job. That Hawaiian song is something Elisa introduced me to--it's really popular with people that know it from Hawaii.
